In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to care for his flock of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the breezes among the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his wards instilled here in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.

Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
